This lesson, created by Rachel Waldner, involved learning
about tribal masks and their purpose followed by making our own tribal masks using
several different 3D paper folding techniques. The lesson starts off by
learning about many different types of masks, what they were used for and the different
elements used in each mask. The lesson focused mainly on the use of balance, asymmetrical
and symmetrical, and also a focus on shapes and how they are incorporated into
the mask. To create our own masks we were given a paper plate and were told to
use at least three different paper folding techniques taught in class, besides
that it was mainly up to the student to decide the style of the mask and its
outcome.
An extension activity for this lesson could be to have the
students explain where their masks would be used. Using what they have already
learned about what some masks are used for they could write a story on the
rituals or dances their masks is used and give it a fake background. This allows
them to extend on why they created their masks the way they did and also gives
them a chance to practice their creative writing skills.
